The major of Spanish Language and Literature was established in 2006, and in September 2007, it officially admitted major students from the whole country as one of the first institutions in the province to offer Spanish as an undergraduate subject. The major has always been to cultivate Spanish professionals with good overall quality, solid language skills and professional ability, international vision, innovative spirit, and meet the needs of national and regional development as its mission. We have been making use of the strengths of our major and the comprehensive disciplines of Shandong University to actively develop and improve the international training model, create a good language learning environment and build an innovative platform for talent training. After more than ten years of unremitting efforts, the program has become an important base for teaching and researching Spanish in the East of China. According to the Report on the Evaluation of Chinese Universities and Subject Specialties (2022-2023), this program is ranked 14th in China and 8th in comprehensive universities.
Faculty: There are 7 Chinese teachers and 1 associate professor, 4 of whom have obtained PhD degrees, and the rest of them are studying for PhD degrees. All the teachers have overseas study experience and their research disciplines cover linguistics, literature, history, translation, and regional and country studies. As the youngest teaching unit in the university, the faculty members have participated in many national conferences on teaching Spanish, improving the training system, innovating teaching concepts and teaching methods, and publishing many papers on teaching. He has published many scientific papers and monographs, and has hosted and participated in several national, provincial and university-level teaching and research projects.
Cultivation characteristics: The Spanish major of Shandong University focuses on cultivating high-end Spanish talents with a complex curriculum, and after years of exploration, it has formed a three-dimensional cultivation path of “selfcrossing-intracrossing--extracrossing”. First, in the construction of the curriculum, we have formed the self-crossing of Spanish majors through the construction of courses on culture, national conditions, politics and economic and trade, and actively connected with international exchange programs to expand the path of composite knowledge transfer within the language majors; secondly, relying on the strong advantages of foreign language majors in the School of Foreign Languages, we have continuously explored the internal crossover of foreign language majors and actively participated in the construction of the “main majors + micro majors” dual-driven cultivation model, encourage students to participate in micro major studies such as “international organizations and cross-cultural communication” and “foreign translation and communication of Chinese studies”, accumulate interdisciplinary knowledge structure and improve comprehensive competitive ability. The “Spanish + Second Major” training model has matured and will be established in 2024. In 2024, we will set up a module of “Spanish + International Communication” to strengthen the professional integration and improve the students' overall competitiveness.
International exchange: The program has established long-term and stable cooperation and exchange relations with many famous foreign institutions, using the rich teaching resources abroad to create an overseas learning experience of "language exchange and cultural dialogue" for students. Students can choose to go to the University of La Rioja, the University of Alcalá , and the University of Valencia (Erasmus exchange program) in Spain for 1-2 semesters. In addition, as a designated selection base of the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the department regularly sends students to study in Latin American universities every year, and nearly 10 students have been sponsored by the CSC to go to Mexico and Colombia for a one-year exchange program.
Employment Prospects: Graduates of this major are favored by employment agencies for their solid language skills, outstanding interdisciplinary advantages and strong overall competitiveness. Since the establishment of the department, nearly 500 graduates of this major have worked in the fields of diplomacy, economic and trade, culture and scientific research, making positive contributions to the study of Chinese to Spanish-speaking countries and the political, economic and cultural exchanges between China and Spanish-speaking countries.
