Department of Russian Language and Literature

The Department of Russian Language and Literature in Shandong University is the earliest in China to have undergraduate Russian majors.?The history of the Department can be traced back to the early 1950s, a time when He Feng and Fang Weiai were the Department’s directors. It was their work and direction that laid a solid foundation for the establishment of the foreign language department. Later in 1993, the Department was authorized to initiate an MA degree program.

The Department is now a member of the Russian Group under the Directive Committee for Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education,the executive director unit of the Russian Teaching Studies Association in China. Prof. Cong Yaping is director of the Russian Department and Associate Professors Zhang Su and Li Jiangang are the Department’s deputy directors.

The Russian Department has an outstanding faculty that has made great achievements in teaching and research. Currently, there are two professors, nine associate professors and two lecturers in the Department. Among them, six are MA supervisors, five have PhDs, one is a doctoral candidate and two are pursuing post-doctoral research. Teachers with a doctorate are all under the age of 40. Ninety-two percent of the teachers have overseas experience. In addition to offering a BA degree program having 100 undergraduates, the Department offers an MA degree having 15 postgraduates.
The Department’s teaching features include a combination of breadth and specialization, teaching and research and cultural exchanges between China and the western world. In addition, it enjoys a measure of prestige among Russian Majors in China for its academic achievements, outstanding faculty, forceful innovation, creative ideas in education and sound quality in teaching.

The Department has an array of well organized undergraduate courses, including Spoken Russian, Audio and Video Russian, Russian Grammar, Russian Extensive Reading, Russian Writing, Comprehensive Russian, Russian and Soviet Literature, An Overview of Russia and Its culture, Translation Theory and Practice, Newspaper Reading, TV News, and Business Russian and English. Courses offered in the MA program include Cultural Linguistics, Russian Literature, Introduction to Contemporary Russian, Russian Pragmatics, Russian and Russian Culture, Rhetoric in Russian Literature, Interpretation Skills and Practice, Chinese-Russian Translation Skills, Writing Skills and Practice, Functional Rhetoric, Movie Appreciation, Semantics and Studies of Russian Society.

One of the Department’s guiding principles is to develop students’ ability to communicate, translate, teach and conduct research in Russian and entreat students to make use of their interdisciplinary talents in education, research, diplomacy, commerce and social services. A second guiding principle is to propel research through teaching and propel teaching through research. Over the past five years, the Department’s staff has edited and published eight books, bringing it a sound reputation. With the improvement of its academic level, it is playing an active role in participating in and organizing academic conferences, all of which promote its scholastic fame and standing. To develop students’ all-round quality, it has initiated a new way of cultivating them at home and abroad, both on and off campus and in and out of class.?Students’ overseas practice, social practice and classroom practice are all integrated. The Department also regularly organizes speech contests, parties, Russian Corner activities, and plays Russian films. The Russian periodicals and books available in the reading room and reference room provide a sound environment for study and progress.
