Department of French Language and Literature
The Department of French Language and Literature in the School of Foreign Languages and Literature in Shandong University was established in 1994. Among its over 120 graduates, nearly half are now studying for their MA or PhD in such celebrated universities as Peking University,Beijing International Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. A third of the graduates are teachers of French in colleges and universities while others serve as translators or interpreters in Chinese-French?joint ventures. All of the graduates are able to find suitable jobs. Consequently, students, their parents and people from all walks of life applaud the quality of teaching that is carried out in the Department of French Language and Literature.
There are two associate professors, two lecturers, two assistants and one foreign teacher in the Department. They are responsible for the teaching of French Majors as well as the undergraduates and postgraduates in the university who learn French as a second foreign language.
The Department stresses cultivating students’ creativity and practical abilities. Its goal is to train students to gain knowledge, apply knowledge, analyze, and deepen their insight into the society and culture of French-speaking countries. This meets society’s demand for students who are knowledgeable about the French language and are competent to work in the fields of diplomacy, economics and trade, law, science and technology, military affairs, and education.
The Department offers courses that include Basic French, Advanced French, French Grammar, French Listening, Oral French, French Extensive Reading, French-Chinese and Chinese-French Translation, French Linguistics, French Stylistics, Selected Reading in French Literature, French Lexicology, French Economy and Culture, French Films, French Writing, French Dialogues, European Culture, Scientific French, Business French, and Tourism French.
The Department arranges French “frontier lectures” given by experts from the university or from other universities between the fifth and seventh semester. Students are required to attend at least four lectures and write one paper on one of the lectures.
The Department also is involved in presenting social practices and French culture in such diverse forms as improvised translation, French plays, and interviews and debates in French.
