Department of German Language and Literature

The Department of German Language and Literature was founded in 1996. Now it offers a four-year undergraduate degree program and cultivates students to have a deeper and wider knowledge of German society and culture and be proficient in using the German language. Compulsory courses for German Majors include German Intensive Reading, German Dialogues, Basic German Listening, Audio and Video German, German Writing, Advanced German, Advanced German Listening, and German Translation Theory and Practice. Selective courses include History of German Literature, a Brief History of Germany, Selected Readings of German Literature, The German Economy, German Tourism, German Science and Technology, Foreign Trade, German Applied Writing, Introduction to Germany, German Linguistics, and German Stylistics.

The Department has established cooperative and exchange relations with Augusburg University and Munich Language and Translation College in Germany. Every year excellent students are sent on exchange programs to these universities. Now there are three associate professors, one lecturer, two assistants and a teacher from Germany in the Department. In recent years, the staff of the Department has published seven translated works, two textbooks and 10 academic papers. They have also taken part in one key national research project and one provincial research project.

The Department’s objective is to train students to have a good grasp and mastery of the German language and literature as well as to introduce them to German history, culture, politics and economy. This enables students to work as translators, researchers, teachers and managers in the fields of diplomacy, trade and economy, culture, the news media, and tourism.
