Department of Korean Language and Literature

The Department of Korean Language and Literature in the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Shandong University came into being in 1992 when China and South Korea established diplomatic relations. After over ten years of construction, the Department has made great development. In 2004, it was authorized to initiate MA degree program. At present, the Department has a student population of over 180, including postgraduates, undergraduates and three-year program students.

There are one professor, four associate professors, three lecturers and two teachers from South Korea in the Department. Among the Chinese teachers, four are MA supervisors. All of them have overseas experience, and most of them have got their MA or PhD in South Korea. With abundant specialized knowledge, great familiarity to the most updated research trends in South Korean Studies and close contact with the South Korean academic circles, the teachers have unparalleled advantage in Korean teaching and research. In the past few years, the staff of the Department has produced five monographs, nine translated works, four sets of South Korean textbooks, and 30-odd academic papers. They also preside over or participate in five ministerial or provincial research projects. All these bring the Department national and international reputations in South Korean studies.

On the undergraduate degree program, courses are offered in South Korean literature, South Korean lexics, Introduction to the Korean Peninsula, newspaper reading and Business Korean and there are also practice in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. This broadens the students’ horizon of Korean linguistics, literature, history, society, culture, politics and economy. The MA program has three specialties: South Korean linguistics, South Korean literature, and South Korean culture. The students on the program are armed with comprehensive and more specialized subjects for further research.

The geographical closeness of Shandong Province to South Korea and the close cooperation and frequent exchanges of human and material sources between the two sides have given the Department peerless advantage in providing its students with sound opportunity for social practice and employment.

Shandong University has exchange programs and cooperation with many South Korean universities, such as Korean University, Sungkyunkwan University, Kyung Hee University, Chung Ang University, Changwon University, Gyeong-Sang National University, and Kyungwon University. Every year the department dispatches students of one class or one grade to study in these universities. This improves the students’ language level and gives them personal experience of South Korean society and culture.
