College English Department

College English Department (abbreviated as CED), a teaching section of the School of Foreign Languages, undertakes general purpose English teaching tasks for more than 40 thousand undergraduate and 10 thousand postgraduate students in 29 schools of Shandong University (SDU). It has a large faculty of 163 members including 143 teachers, 4 members of administrative staff and 16 teaching assistant personnel. Among its teaching faculty, there are 10 professors and 48 associate professors. 15 of its teachers are Ph.D.s or Ph.D. candidates and 96 have got their Master’s Degrees. Since 2001, 33 teachers have been abroad for further studies and about one third of the teaching faculty have overseas studying experiences.

CED consists of 6 subsidiary teaching sections and 3 teaching and training centers, namely, 3 Undergraduates Teaching Sections, Postgraduates Teaching Section, Follow-Up Courses Teaching Section, Web Teaching Section, Modern Educational Technology Experimental Center, Foreign Languages Testing Center, and Foreign Languages Educational Development Center.

With Professor Jia Weiguo as dean and Gao Yan, Li Ling, Cui Xiaoping, Chen Wei as deputy deans, we are committed to the integration of language acquisition system and personality culture system to establish a college teaching system with our unique characteristics.

Based on the orientation of SDU and requirement of social development, our object is to improve teaching quality through the strengthening of creative self-study ability of students. At the same time, we emphasize the establishment of language environment and encourage individualized teaching so as to promote the innovation and reform in teaching material, assessment methods and teaching models. Due to our achievement in teaching reform, in May 2006, SDU is ratified as a Model School for College English Teaching Reform by the Ministry of Education.

The interaction between teaching and scientific research has always been a focus of our work. In recent four years, we have undertaken 4 state-level teaching research programs, 3 provincial programs and 8 school programs. In addition, we have published more than 100 theses on different kinds of journals, 5 pieces of academic works, and a dozen textbooks, which shows the general improvement of our teaching ability and theoretical research.

We have established pioneering College English Web Teaching Platform in our Web Teaching Section, which, by making full use of multi-media system and the Internet, integrates web course videotaping, courseware making, database construction and web teaching management. Through this we have broadened the students knowledge, enriched teaching methods, strengthened the communication between teachers and students and provided excellent web environment for self-study.

Consisting of standardized examination question bank and data processing system, the Foreign Languages Testing Center of CED undertakes the tasks of setting, grading, analyzing examination papers and data storing to provide reliable services for supervision over teaching process, follow-up quality control and decision-making of teaching management personnel.

Follow-Up Courses Teaching Section is mainly in charge of the teaching of English optional courses, language improvement courses and applicational courses of all the students in SDU. In order to satisfy the students ever-broadening interests and improve their comprehensive language ability, we have drafted specified teaching development plan through scientific management and set up multi-disciplinary course development target. There are altogether 12 follow-up courses for advanced students and more than 30 optional courses in teaching now which cover language ability, society and culture, and English for special purposes.

In addition, Modern Educational Technology Experimental Center, Foreign Languages Testing Center, and Foreign Languages Educational Development Center are ready to provide training, technological research and development, and project consultation services.

We are willing to strengthen cooperation with fellow institutions of higher education.
